ABOUT US
MEET JULIE
Swim With Phyn is an independent, owner-operated swim school founded by Julie (Phyn) Smith. Julie has been specializing in teaching babies and young children how to swim for over 25 years, in addition to working with older students at all skill levels. At Swim With Phyn, Julie has developed a curriculum specifically for children, as young as 2 weeks old, to navigate the water safely. Swim With Phyn is a proud member of the US Swim School Association and regularly attends conferences to ensure our curriculum is as up-to-date and effective as possible for our students.
In addition to spending +30 hours each week in the pool teaching little ones, Julie is an avid runner, fitness expert, and loves cruising around the area in her fish car, so be sure to see if you can find “Nemo” around town! Beep, beep!! Glub, Glub!!
OUR PHILOSOPHY
Swim With Phyn focuses on "learning through play," which enables children to succeed as they play games, complete challenges, and bond with caregivers. At Swim With Phyn, we believe that children learn best when they are taught with love and positive encouragement, while allowing them to make choices and participate in the learning process throughout.
We have only one lesson at a time with an extensively trained instructor who is knowledgeable about teaching age-appropriate classes. We believe this creates the most conducive environment for little ones to learn and feel comfortable in the water. Routine, consistency, and an intimate setting really set us apart from the rest.
OUR FACILITY
Our pool is an indoor facility located in Laguna Hills, CA. The water is kept at, or very near, 92 degrees, making it more comfortable and enjoyable, especially on rainy days and in the evenings. Our facility also provides the added benefit of complete UV protection, so no sunscreen is needed for any lessons!
The chlorine level is kept as low as possible, monitored and adjusted multiple times per day, to make it easier on little eyes while swimming.

All of our classes and private lessons are dynamically priced based on type and can be found on the enrollment pages for Baby & Me, Just For Kids, and Private lessons under the specific class-type sign-ups.

If you are on a waitlist, you should not attend the first class, as it means you are waiting for someone in that class to drop out or switch to a different class. No class has more than 10 people on a waitlist at any given time.
If another class works for you, you MAY sign up for it and remain on another waitlist. To get off the waitlist and open it to someone else, email us at info@swimwithphyn.com. If more than one waitlist works for you, we encourage you to sign up for multiple waitlists to increase your chances of getting a preferred class and time.

Starting to learn swimming is recommended as soon as possible! Babies are born with the natural ability to kick and hold their breath, which they lose between 2 and 8 months old. The earlier we start, the more we can build on their natural ability, as babies can start lessons as soon as their belly button heals (if the baby had a circumcision, then that also needs to heal before lessons can begin).
As children get older, they begin to develop fear, so the sooner we teach safe choices around water, the easier it is for them to learn!

In addition to the required diapers, we ask you to bring a towel for each person/baby going into the pool, and a small snack for afterward.
Swimmers under the age of 3.5 Years Old, or swimmers who are not fully potty-trained, must wear 2 reusable swim diapers (at the same time) from one of the approved brands listed in the information guide provided during registration (cloth diapers and diaper covers are NOT acceptable).
Please DO NOT use diapers that adjust for size, "one size", etc. (typically have multiple snaps all over the diaper); these are not reliable and, although sometimes advertised as "swim" diapers, are more appropriate as cloth diaper covers.

During the registration process, the full cancellation policy is provided, and we highly advise reading through it carefully upon receipt. You are required to agree to it to enroll in any class, and we will follow the policy regardless of the circumstances.
Any cancellation, at any time, for any reason, is charged a fee of some sort and is based on the class amount that you will agree to (and print for your personal records) during registration. At any time during lessons, if the date and time no longer work for you and we are able to accommodate a switch to an open class of the same level, given our class size maximums, we will do so free of charge.
Sometimes things open up as the class progresses, and we will keep you on a list if you want to switch.

If you are late to a group lesson, you will likely be allowed in the pool unless it proves too disruptive to the lesson, in which case you may not be allowed in out of respect for students and caregivers who showed up on time.
If you are late to a private lesson by more than half the allotted session time, the instructor may choose not to hold the lesson, forfeiting the swim session. We reserve the right to use the forfeited pool time however we see fit, which may mean offering the empty pool time to another child/student for any reason, at the instructor's sole discretion.
When you arrive, please IMMEDIATELY see the instructor on the pool deck or in the pool to inquire about whether or not it is appropriate for you to attend the lesson late.

You should think of your weekly time as you would a university class or other paid sports classes. You pay monthly for your weekly sessions and are expected to show up on your designated day and time; if you miss class, you miss class. Special accommodations can not be made for individual circumstances due to limited resources.
For our private classes, a minimum of 24 hours' advance notice before the lesson is required, and makeup lessons are restricted to a maximum of 1 lesson per month. The advanced notice must be received in the manner discussed in the agreements you sign during enrollment (text, email, call, etc)—no need to contact us if you plan to miss a group class.

Swimming actually has so many amazing qualities, one of which is a stronger immune system, with congestion often cleared by swimming.
HOWEVER, if your child has diarrhea or has sickness-related vomiting (not spit-up) or has had diarrhea in the past 24 hours, you are asked to keep your child home, as we cannot afford a fecal matter pool closure, which will incur a cleaning & administration fee. Additionally, if a doctor has informed you that your child has a contagious disease or infection, please keep them away for the doctor-recommended time frame.
Be sure to let us know what is going on directly via email at info@swimwithphyn.com so that we can work with you on possible options if your absence will be exceptionally long (more than 2-3 weeks) and if you will miss the remainder of the class’s curriculum.

NO child, adult, or person is EVER drown-proof. Anything can happen at any time, so we need to always be on our guard around water.
Children must ALWAYS be supervised in and around water. We teach children how to rest when they tire out, where to find safe spots in the pool, and what it feels like to “accidentally go swimming”, but vigilant caregivers are critical.
Constant supervision is the most important way to keep your child safe in and around water.
