Group Lessons

Beginner Levels

All new students who have not had formal swimming lessons AND/OR who are not comfortable taking instructional directions while in the water (practicing strokes and using equipment) should begin group lessons in a beginner class.

Sea Otters
2 weeks - 8 months

Sea Otters allows for the littlest swimmers to learn and grow in an environment set up for success. Early exposure to water is linked to so many beneficial attributes, like early walking, greater immunity, and high self-esteem. Babies are born with the natural ability to hold their breath and kick which they lose anywhere from 2 – 8 months, so the earlier they get in the water, the more we can build on natural ability! The class focuses on happy swimmers, by teaching the parents the skills they need to feel comfortable in the water with their child. Some skills covered are floating, kicking, submersions, and safety. As each child develops, new skills are added to keep the process fun and inviting.

Sea Otters is a great place for the baby with little or no exposure to swimming to start! Sea Otters will all graduate to the Manatee class. Up to 6 children in each class, one parent in the water.

Manatees
7 months - 24 months

The same skills that are taught in Sea Otters are reinforced in Manatees. Any baby over 5 months and under 24 months can join the Manatee group, though most Manatees tend to be a bit older and more interactive than the littlest Sea Otters. The class focuses on happy swimmers, teaching the parents the skills they need to feel comfortable in the water with their child. Skills covered include: floating, kicking, submersions, and safety. As each child develops, new skills are added to keep the process fun and inviting. The Manatee group is both a good place to begin to learn to swim, and a place for the little ones (Sea Otters) to graduate.

Manatees may move on to either Moray Eels, Sea Turtles or Sting Rays, depending on what skill level and age they are when they are ready or need (based on age) to move on to a new group. Up to 6 children in each class, one parent in the water.

Moray Eels
24 months – 41 months (2 - 3.5 years)

Moray Eels is for toddlers who have little or no exposure to water and/or swimming lessons. This class has an emphasis on making toddlers comfortable around the water and learning and mastering all the basic safety skills. Toddlers in this class are introduced to floating, submersion and safety skills as well as introducing them to independent swimming, including swimming from the step or off the wall to their parents and an introduction to breath-work and stroke development. This class will give first-timers the special attention that goes along with learning the basic routine of the swimming classes, terminology and safety skills that are practiced with every swimmer from the time they start Swim With Phyn.

Moray Eels will either move on to Sunfish, Sting Ray or Beluga depending on what skill level and age they are when they are ready or need (based on age) to move on to a new group. One parent is in the water with each child at all times, 4 students per class.
